ABC greenlight Agent Carter TV series

Hot on the heels of the news that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been renewed for a second series, and in a week where pilot shows have been dropping like flies as American channels have been announcing their schedules for Autumn 2014, ABC has announced that they have green lit a show which follows Agent Carter.

Agent Peggy Carter featured extensively in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and there has been extensive speculation about whether the agent would feature in future Marvel projects. First there were rumours that she would feature in future Marvel one shots which feature on the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of Marvel’s feature length films, like the one featured in Iron Man 3. However, it has now been revealed that the one shot serves as a kind of pilot for the television series which will follow on directly from the events in Captain America.

The official synopsis says that:

“Marvel’s Agent Carter, starring Captain America’s Hayley Atwell, follows the story of Peggy Carter. It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalised when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers.”

Given the reference to Howard Stark it seems likely that Dominic Cooper will be resuming his role as the playboy father of Tony Stark (know to most as Iron Man), and Hayley Atwell is set to star in the series as the central character.
