The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is transported to 1950’s New York City in West Side Story, which comes to the Mayflower Theatre from the 22nd of April – 3rd of May. The show comes to Southampton fresh from a sell- out season at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
Featuring innovative choreography by Jerome Robbins, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Soundheim, the popular musical has been revived for a 2014 tour. Joey McKneely’s stage production continues to delight modern audiences and is critically acclaimed, with the Guardian labelling it ‘one of the towering achievements of musical theatre of the last century’ and the Evening Standard describing it as ‘a masterpiece.’
The musical features a range of memorable and timeless songs including Maria, Tonight, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere. Katie Hall and Lewis Maskell head the cast as the star crossed lovers Maria and Tony, whose links with two rival gangs mean that they should not be together. Although they cannot fight their feelings for one another, their relationship is allowed to run smoothly.
