On the 23rd October 2005, Sheffield-based, revolutionary indie-rock band Arctic Monkeys reached number one in the UK charts with their outstanding track ‘I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor’, featured on their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006).

The song won Best Track at the annual NME Awards in February 2006, just one of several awards won by the band including Best New Band, Best British Band and Album of the Year for their incredible debut LP. They later went on to successfully secure the 2006 Mercury Award for the 2006 album.

With classic Arctic Monkeys style, the track is full of lively guitar licks, a catchy bass undertone and, of course, the contagious voice of Alex Turner himself with subtle backing by band members Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and former bassist Andy Nicholson. The music video for the track compliments the track itself in true nostalgic form with recordings done on 1970’s cameras simply performed in front a small live audience.

With nine years since its release, and a further four successful studio-released albums, ‘I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor’ was nothing but an insight into how successful the band would become. The tone of the band has remained virtually untouched and by retaining the same image throughout their career, it is no surprise that Arctic Monkeys have grown the incredible fan base they currently have. The success of this band and this particular debut number one track is truly emphasised by the unforgettable performance of the single at the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.
