BRITs Critics’ Choice Award 2014 winner announced

Sam Smith has been announced as the winner of 2014’s BRITs Critics’ Choice Award.

Sam Smith beat Ella Eyre and Chlöe Howl, who were announced as the nominees for the prize last week, with all three also named in the BBC’s Sound of 2014 long list. The Award is given to the act which music industry experts think is the most promising artist for the coming year.

The 21-year-old who is due to release his debut album in the spring shot to fame last year when he sang on the Disclosure track ‘Latch’. In May he featured on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ which topped the UK singles chart.

Sam Smith’s debut single ‘Money On My Mind’ will be released in February.

The announcement marks the second year of a male winning the gong, following a streak of several female winners including Adele, Emeli Sandé, Florence & the Machine, Ellie Goulding and Jessie J.

The BRIT Awards will take place at London’s O2 Arena on 19th February 2014. Previous winner Tom Odell will present Sam Smith with the prize at the nominations announcement on 9th January 2014.
