Bastille – ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’

Ever since the release of ‘Pompeii’ earlier this year, Bastille have established themselves firmly in the charts, and new single ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’ looks set to add to their popularity.

One of the more obvious single choices from their debut album, Bad Blood, ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’ showcases frontman Dan Smith’s haunting vocals over a melancholy cello and piano opening, before handclap-like drums and pizzicato strings kick in for the anthemic chorus.

The simple, storytelling lyrics add a subtlety to the track which compliments the gradual atmospheric build-up very nicely. Whilst the repetition of lyrics such as “the future’s in our hands and we will never be the same again” could easily become annoying, they’re perfectly balanced on the fine line between catchy and irritating.

The choral harmonies we’re beginning to associate with Bastille keep things interesting, while the claps and non-intrusive accompaniment help to distinguish it as one of the stand-out tracks of the album, before rounding off in the same beautifully simple way that it began.

Overall, a great summer anthem.
