Martin Freeman has been cast in Marvel’s upcoming Phase 3 epic, Captain America: Civil War.
The actor, who is best known for his roles in The Hobbit trilogy and BBC’s Sherlock, is just the latest star to align his talents to the film, joining an all-star cast that also includes Marvel regulars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson.
Marvel’s head producer, Kevin Feige expressed his delight at Freeman’s involvement on the comic book studio’s website;
“From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
The film, which has already started production and is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, sees Captain America stand off against fellow Avenger Iron Man after the two disagree about a new law that regulates superhuman activity in a world deeply affected by the events in Age of Ultron.
Freeman’s character in the film is yet to be revealed, but his involvement is sure to spark a furore amongst fan communities – especially after the news that his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch has also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is set to star as Doctor Strange in the upcoming 2017 Marvel standalone.
Captain America: Civil War hits UK cinemas on 29th April 2016.
