The unstoppable Sheridan Smith (recent star of ITV’s Cilla) is set to continue her rising fame in 2015 with a starring role in ITV’s three-part drama entitled Black Work.

Smith, having broken the musical boundaries with her portrayal of Cilla Black this autumn, will now take on a quite different character in this new police drama alongside Kenny Doughty (Vera, Snow Piercer), Honor Kneafsey (Our Zoo, Abducted) and Matthew McNulty (Jamaica Inn, Misfits); just a few of the well-known names set to join the cast.

Black Work will follow Smith as Jo Gillespie, a police officer and mother to seven-year-old Melly, portrayed by Kneafsey, in her bid to uncover who is responsible for the murder of her husband Ryan, played by Doughty, an undercover police officer who is shot in mysterious circumstances. Aggrieved but determined, Jo must delve into the past, discovering hidden truths about her husband’s work and facing up to the neglected realities of her marriage and family life.

Written by Matt Charman and to be produced by Mammoth Screen, this gripping thriller is also set to feature Douglas Henshall (Shetland), Geraldine James (Utopia), Phil Davis (Whitechapel), Oliver Woollford (Utopia), Sharon Duce (Coronation Street), Andrew Knott (Spooks: Code 9), Ace Bhatti (Eastenders), Carla Henry (Homefront), Lisa Dillon (Cranford), Vinette Robinson (Sherlock), and Ben-Ryan Davies (Waterloo Road) to complete a seamlessly talented cast.
