BBC Sound of 2014 longlist unveiled

The BBC have revealed the longlist of acts who are up for the coveted BBC Sound of 2014 position.

The list brings together 15 of the most promising musical acts – as voted for by 170 DJs, critics, broadcasters and bloggers – which this year includes 10 acts from the UK.

18-year-old pop starlet Chlöe Howl appears on the list, as does Los Angeles’ BANKS, twin sisters Say Lou Lou and Chicago hip hop musician – and recent James Blake collaboratorChance the Rapper.

Singer, DJ and producer MNEK who has recently appeared on tour with Annie Mac made the cut, as did Naughty Boy collaborators Sam Smith and Ella Eyre. Elsewhere, 19-year-old George Ezra who supported Lianne La Havas on tour in 2012, and Brighton duo Royal Blood are also named.

Luke Sital-Singh who has been described by BBC 6music’s Lauren Laverne as “unbelievably good” makes an appearance, as does 26-year-old Nick Mulvey – former member of the Mercury-nominated Portico Quartet.

Electronic producer and singer Sampha, 25-year-old FKA Twigs, Los Angeles-based Kelela and West London duo Jungle complete the longlist.

Previous winners include Adele, Keane and Emeli Sandé, while last year’s victors Haim debuted at number one with their album Days Are Gone in September.

The top five shortlist of artists will be revealed in the week commencing 6th January 2014, with the winner announced on 10th January.
